Wind Lease Agreements

As more and more companies approach farmers about entering into agreements for wind turbines on their farms to generate renewable energy, experts are advising farmers to take advantage of a new worksheet that helps farmers evaluate whether a proposed lease is a good option for them.
It's a product of MSU and covers all the bases of wind leasing, including payment options.  Farmers will find that some of the areas covered have much in common with leasing agreements from gas and oil companies.
The most important rule for entering a lease agreement for a windmill is to consult with an attorney.  Everything is negotiable, but there's no reason to be intimidated if you consult with a professional.  Agreements are complicated and no one wants to enter a 99 year lease by accident or because you didn't read the fine print.
A copy of the wind lease worksheet is available on the Michigan Farm Bureau's website at:

The PDF worksheet can be downloaded from the "Additional Resources" menu on the right, under the "Quick Reference" tab.
