Fees Coming For Michigan Child Support Recipients

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan officials will start charging some child support recipients a $25 annual fee.  Starting in September, the fee will be assessed in all child support cases where the custodial parent has never been on welfare and has received at least $500 in support during a one-year period.  State officials said Thursday the fee is required by federal law.

The fees will go to the federal government and state government to offset the costs of operating child support programs. The average amount of child support received annually by parents who will pay the fee is $5,600.  Michigan will deduct $25 from families' next child support payment after they have gotten at least $500.
