Frankenmuth Symbols Challenged

Anger and determination are among the emotions reflected in Frankenmuth residents in the face of a pending legal challenge by Lloyd Clarke to the Christian symbolism of the city shield. President and CEO Wayne Bronner of Bronner's Christmas Wonderland says his late father Wally helped design the shield, which he insists accurately reflects the community's founding by Lutheran missionaries. Bronner says removing the "Luther" rose would detract from the people who built and run Frankenmuth.
Bronner and some 100 other people came to Tuesday's Frankenmuth City Council meeting to hear Clarke's presentation. The city says it will defend the legality of its shield in court if necessary. |
