Site Plan Approved For Midland Coal Fired Power Plant
Midland's Planning Commission has approved a site plan for a proposed 1.9 billion dollar coal fired power plant to be located at South Saginaw and Waldo Roads. Officials from Mid Michigan Energy say the 130 acre project would generate 750 megawatts and stimulate economic growth.
Skeptics downplay the company estimates of hundreds of construction and permanent jobs. Opponents say the initiative would also increase health risks for area residents. Mid Michigan Energy representatives say the site's air discharge estimates are within federal and state guidelines. The site plan now goes to the Midland City Council for an April 14th public hearing.
