Swine Virus Found At Saginaw County Ranch

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A highly contagious swine virus has been detected on a privately owned game ranch in Saginaw County. The Michigan Department of Agriculture's Geagley Laboratory says it confirmed the outbreak of pseudorabies at the ranch, which has 19 sport swine. Pseudorabies is a highly contagious viral disease that kills newborn piglets and can affect other animals, but doesn't hurt people.
State Agriculture Director Don Koivisto says Michigan had been classified as free of pseudorabies since 2000. The department is taking steps to prevent the virus from spreading. All swine on the Saginaw County ranch will be captured and
destroyed, along with feral swine in the area. |
